There has been an increase in the demand of health care workers (worldwide) due to the rapid increase in population the world over. There is also a shortage of good health care workers which has resulted in many medical institutions and hospitals constantly on the look out for new nurses and LPNs. LPN courses are increasingly becoming popular due to the their relatively short course duration.
Normally it takes around 4 years to complete a nursing degree and although there are many colleges that do offer two year programs as well. But not many people are able to cope with the intense academic pressure of a two year course. The short duration coupled together with the relatively high pay has resulted in more and more people opting for a LPN course instead.
A normal LPN course usually takes around a year or two to complete as opposed to the 4 year that it takes in order to become a registered nurse. Nowadays there are many schools and colleges which offer LPN courses. LPN’s are also sometimes called LVNs (Licensed Vocational Nurse) in some states. The LPN level is generally considered as the first step that a normal person can take in order to get into the health care industry.
One thing that you need to understand is that the role of an LPN and a nurse is not the same. The tasks that LPNs are responsible for include administering medications to patients as well as monitoring their vital signs and ensuring that they are comfortable at all times. An LPN course is considered as an entry level nursing education.
Today LPN courses are also offered online, these online courses are tailor made for those individuals who want to study without having to give up their day jobs. There are many sites on the internet that offer online LPN courses. Not only are these courses convenient for those people who are working but these also provide the same quality of education that you may get in a traditional school setting.
In order to become a registered and practicing LPN you are required to pass the NCLEX-PN exam which takes place after you are done with your 9 to 12 month course.
After you have successfully cleared your exam then you can start working immediately. LPNs are in great demand these days and their average salary ranges from $30,000 to $36,000.
Clearing an LPN course also provides you with enough time to consider whether a medical career is the correct choice you for. The LPN course can also act as a first hand look at what your life may be like if you continue to consider a career in the health care industry.
